Established in 1945, the Disarmament and International Security Committee (DISEC) stands as the cornerstone of international security. As the First Committee of the United Nations General Assembly, it wields the powerful mandate to confront global peace, disarmament, and stability, acting as a forum where the ambitions of great powers collide with the aspirations of smaller states. Facing resurging arms trade and geopolitical rivalries, DISEC persists as one of multilateral dialogue’s final bastions, protecting the international world order from certain anarchic destruction.
The contemporary landscape of modern warfare has been shaped by unprecedented technological developments. Thus, DISEC takes the centre stage with a formidable challenge – tackling the Question of Lethal Autonomous Weapons (LAWs), systems that leverage artificial intelligence to identify and eliminate human targets without direct human intervention. As LAWs redefine the contours of warfare and create new frontiers for conflicts, machines lacking sentience ignite fierce debate on their legitimacy, accountability, and sanctity. To some, LAWs represent military precision and tactical dominance; to others, they threaten to strip warfare of its human conscience.
Within DISEC’s chambers, diplomacy will be tested and strained, and consensus must be hard-won. Delegates shall traverse a minefield of competing international ethical doctrines, military ambitions, and technological uncertainties. Delegates must grapple with the tension between technological innovation and humanitarian law, evaluating whether LAWs represent progress or peril for the future of humanity.
