WTO

Introduction

In this era of unprecedented globalisation, the World Trade Organisation (WTO) serves as the foremost institution supervising and liberalising international trade. Hailed as the guardian of global commerce, its 164 members represent 98% of global trade. The WTO is built on the vision of open markets and multilateral cooperation, providing arbitration platforms and forums for nations to helm the future of international trade law.

Yet, the global economy lies fractured under the weight of rising protectionism, strained alliances, and escalating trade wars, thrusting the committee’s fundamental raison d’être under threat. Global conflicts deliver countless economic shocks to interconnected trade networks, laying siege to the already-tense landscape of cooperative multilateralism. Moreover, extensive trade barriers skyrocket under the radical leadership of new policymakers, violating countless international trade law regulations using the misleading guise of ‘national security’. Hence, it is in this volatile landscape that the WTO convenes to confront the pressing contention of economic nationalism and institutional inertia.

This council transcends textbook economics – calling for political shrewdness, strategic foresight, and a renewed commitment to international cooperation. Delegates will dissect policy deadlocks, confront populist rhetoric, and wrestle with the systemic fractures plaguing global trade. The critical responsibility of resuscitating the promise of open markets, and preventing isolationism from becoming the new world order, lies on you.
